Houston Honors DJ Screw Day: Screwfest 2025 Takes Over

Houston, TX – June 27, 2025 – The city of Houston stands still today—but in the best way possible—as it honors one of its most legendary sons: Robert Earl “DJ Screw” Davis Jr. On what has become a sacred date in the culture, DJ Screw Day brings fans together from every corner of Texas and beyond to celebrate the man who gave the world the “chopped-and-screwed” sound that would change the course of hip-hop forever.

Screwfest 2025 kicks off this evening at The Encore in downtown Houston. The city will be draped in purple vibes and slowed-down rhythms as fans gather to witness live performances from icons of the Screwed Up Click including Lil’ Flip, Lil’ Keke, Z-Ro, E.S.G., and more.

The celebration doesn’t stop there. On Saturday, July 5, the George R. Brown Convention Center will transform into a full-blown tribute zone. From 12 p.m. to 7 p.m., attendees can experience everything from DJ Screw tribute concerts and a commemorative car show to wellness-centered activities like yoga sessions, alongside local vendors and curated merch—all hosted by Screwed Up Records & Tapes. Tickets for this portion of the celebration are priced around $45.

DJ Screw, born in 1971, was much more than a DJ—he was a movement. Known for creating over 300 original mixtapes, his ability to slow down beats, stretch time, and deepen the vibe of Southern hip-hop became a cultural blueprint. His iconic “June 27 Freestyle,” recorded in 1996, remains one of Houston’s most celebrated musical relics—a 38-minute moment in time that fans continue to treat like a sacred scroll. DJ Screw’s DIY hustle also can’t be overstated: before streaming, before the algorithm, he was moving 15,000 tapes a day, hand to hand, community to community.
