The hip-hop community is mourning the tragic loss of Jacksonville rapper Lil Poppa, who has passed away at just 25 years old.
According to the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office, Lil Poppa — born Janarious Mykel Wheeler — was pronounced deceased Wednesday at 11:23 a.m. News of his passing was later confirmed by multiple major outlets. At this time, authorities have ruled the death a suicide. The loss has sent shockwaves through fans and fellow artists.
Lil Poppa had been steadily building his name since first emerging around 2017. Known for his raw storytelling and emotional transparency, he carved out a space in Southern hip-hop that felt honest and deeply personal. Records like “Love & War” and “Purple Hearts” connected with listeners navigating love, trauma, and mental health.

Signed to Yo Gotti’s Collective Music Group (CMG), Lil Poppa was part of a roster that includes major names such as GloRilla. He had recently released a new single, “Out Of Town Bae,” just days before his passing and was scheduled to celebrate his 26th birthday with a performance in New Orleans next month.
Fans flooded social media as rumors first began circulating, holding onto hope before confirmation arrived. Now, the focus shifts to honoring his artistry and the vulnerability he brought to his music.

Lil Poppa represented another young Southern voice speaking truth through pain. His catalog lives on as a reminder of the weight many artists carry behind the scenes.
