PUNCH AND RAY DANIELS QUESTION WHO’S REALLY RUNNING THE MUSIC BUSINESS

2 min read

As major labels chase cost savings, two industry voices say the game is losing executives who know how to build culture into a strategy.

TDE president Terrence “Punch” Henderson is asking where Black leaders have gone in the music business. On X, Punch argued that Black executives are being pushed out and that Black women are among the first affected. His point was clear: “They are the culture.”

Ray Daniels is raising a related concern about who makes the decisions behind the music. In his breakdown, Daniels recalled L.A. Reid having the No. 1 song in the country but still feeling pressure because Clive Davis had what he described as the No. 1 artist in the world. The story points to an era when executives competed through artist development, sharp strategy, and a deep understanding of what listeners wanted.

Daniels names Sony, Warner, and Universal as part of the changing landscape. He argues that Black executives are being laid off by the droves, while corporate leadership increasingly resembles big-bank investors focused on control and artists’ master recordings. Those claims speak to a larger question: when labels prioritize cost cutting, who is left to recognize an artist’s potential and build a lasting career?

Universal Music Group’s current restructuring offers one concrete example. The company is targeting about $270 million in annual savings. Reported departures include Def Jam chairman and CEO Tunji Balogun, who is expected to leave by year’s end, and Interscope A&R executives Nicole Wyskoarko and Sam Riback.

History shows what culture-aware leadership can help make possible. Clive Davis played a role in developing the careers of artists including Whitney Houston and Alicia Keys.  The concern Punch and Daniels raise is what the game may lose when executives with cultural knowledge are replaced by strategies built mainly around budgets and ownership.
