Veteran comedian Rudy Rush stopped by Bosstalk 101 to give fans an honest look at life behind the comedy curtain. From working alongside comedy legends like Eddie Murphy, Martin Lawrence, and Steve Harvey to sharing stories about Tracy Morgan, Marlon Wayans, Dipset, and former NBA guard Kenny Anderson, Rudy’s journey is packed with experiences that helped shape his career.
Born and raised in Harlem, New York, a community known for producing generations of Black excellence, Rudy credits his upbringing for helping build the confidence and work ethic that carried him into entertainment. If you’ve seen him on Def Comedy Jam, Showtime at the Apollo, or one of his many television specials, this Bosstalk 101 interview delivers the raw, unfiltered stories behind the spotlight.
Rush Talks New York Hoop Dreams
Before comedy became his calling, basketball was Rudy Rush’s first passion. Growing up in one of the country’s toughest and most competitive basketball environments, he used the game as motivation to stay focused and avoid the distractions surrounding him. Although reaching the NBA is a dream achieved by only a small percentage of players, those early years taught him discipline, perseverance, and resilience—qualities that later carried over into his comedy career.

Tracy Morgan, Eddie Murphy & Life in Comedy
Rudy reflects on coming up in comedy alongside Tracy Morgan, whose support helped lead to one of the biggest opportunities of his career with Eddie Murphy. He also shares memories of working during Martin Lawrence’s prime and explains that some of his greatest lessons came while serving as Steve Harvey’s assistant. Although he describes those years as demanding, he acknowledges they taught him the professionalism and discipline required to survive in the entertainment industry.
The interview also dives into one of comedy’s most talked-about subjects—joke theft. Rudy explains that similar ideas can naturally happen in a creative profession and recalls resolving a joke dispute with another comedian before a show without conflict. Rather than allowing it to become an issue, he simply let the host use the joke and kept the show moving.
Throughout his career, Rudy Rush has headlined his own Comedy Central and HBO specials while appearing on Kevin Hart’s Heart of the City, Premium Blend, and a Bounce TV one-hour special. Among his proudest accomplishments, however, is his time with Showtime at the Apollo, where he witnessed unforgettable moments—including being present when a young Jazmine Sullivan was introduced to a national audience.

Dad Life
Raised in a single-parent household, Rudy says fatherhood has become one of his greatest priorities. He believes being an engaged father means more than simply providing—it means staying connected to the ever-changing world his children live in. From keeping up with TikTok trends, viral moments, streaming platforms, music, social media, and the fast-moving interests of today’s younger generation, Rudy admits it can be a challenge. But he believes making that effort helps strengthen communication, build trust, and keep families connected across generations.
