Born in Greenville, South Carolina, in 1941, Jackson rose from humble beginnings to become one of the most recognized voices of the Civil Rights Movement. As a young activist, he joined Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, eventually becoming a trusted member of King’s inner circle. Jackson stood in Memphis during the tragic assassination of Dr. King in 1968, a moment that would further solidify his dedication to carrying the movement forward. From that point on, he committed his life to empowering the disenfranchised, amplifying the voices of the overlooked, and pushing for systemic change across America and beyond.

Jackson went on to found Operation PUSH and the Rainbow Coalition, championing economic justice, voter engagement, and global human rights. His historic presidential runs in 1984 and 1988 helped pave the way for future generations of Black political leadership, expanding representation on a national stage. Even in later years, while battling Parkinson’s disease and other health challenges, he remained active in advocacy, never allowing physical setbacks to silence his mission.
