Darius “Deezle” Harrison’s Fight for “Lollipop” Royalties

In 2008, Lil Wayne dropped one of the biggest singles of his career—“Lollipop.” The track shot straight to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, earned a Grammy Award, and became a defining record of Wayne’s catalog. However, behind the scenes, its success sparked a legal battle that put the spotlight on unpaid royalties and the business practices of Cash Money Records.
Darius “Deezle” Harrison, the New Orleans producer who co-produced “Lollipop,” claimed he never saw the money he was owed for his work on the record. In 2011, Harrison filed a lawsuit against Cash Money, alleging he was owed more than $3 million in royalties. The lawsuit pointed to the massive commercial success of “Lollipop”—millions of digital downloads, radio airplay, and global recognition—arguing that producers behind the music weren’t compensated fairly.

The case became one of several lawsuits stacking up against Cash Money Records during that period. For years, the label faced accusations of withholding payments from artists, producers, and collaborators alike. Harrison’s lawsuit underscored how the ripple effects of unpaid royalties stretched far beyond the headline disputes between Lil Wayne and Birdman.
While Lil Wayne eventually settled his own legal battle with Cash Money in 2018—winning ownership of his masters and freedom from his contract—Harrison’s case highlighted a broader issue: the struggles producers face in securing fair compensation in an industry where paperwork and contracts don’t always match the success of the music.
The fight over “Lollipop” serves as a reminder that behind every hit song is a team of creators whose contributions fuel the culture, and that those contributions deserve to be honored and paid for.
