Ryan Coogler’s ‘The X-Files’ Gets Hulu Series Order—and a New Perspective
Ryan Coogler is opening the door to another world of mystery.

Hulu has officially ordered his reimagining of The X-Files to series, with Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel leading the cast. The story follows two accomplished FBI agents whose different approaches collide when they are assigned to a previously shuttered division investigating unexplained phenomena. Coogler wrote and directed the pilot and will executive produce alongside showrunner Jennifer Yale and other collaborators.
The cultural opportunity here deserves attention. A Black filmmaker helping shape the future of a major science-fiction franchise expands who gets to define its questions, fears, and heroes. Putting Deadwyler at the center also creates room for a Black woman to lead within a genre built around curiosity, authority, and the unknown.
That is an opportunity, not a guarantee of what the finished series will deliver. The real test will be whether this version gives audiences compelling characters and mysteries that justify returning to the franchise.
Coogler has said the goal is to honor what connected with viewers while finding a fresh approach. The official announcement does not provide a premiere date.
What would make you tune in: the original franchise’s legacy, Coogler’s vision, or the new cast?

Black Dollars Under Pressure: Houston’s Contracting Fight Is About Economic Power
