Don Lemon Turns His CNN Exit Into Ownership With New 24/7 Television Network

Don Lemon is officially stepping into a new era—one defined not simply by his return to television, but by ownership.

The veteran journalist and former CNN anchor is preparing to launch The Don Lemon Channel, a free, ad-supported television network that will operate 24 hours a day across linear and streaming platforms. The channel is being developed through Lemon Media Network in partnership with FAST-channel operator Swerve TV. C21Media

The announcement arrives more than three years after Lemon’s highly publicized departure from CNN in April 2023. After spending nearly 17 years with the cable news giant, Lemon could have treated the firing as the end of his career. Instead, he began rebuilding his platform independently.

He launched The Don Lemon Show, expanded his digital audience and continued covering politics, culture and major national conversations without the protection—or restrictions—of a traditional television network.

Now, he is taking that independence to another level.

The Don Lemon Channel is expected to feature twice-daily live programming, daily news updates, archival content and shows from other independent media voices. Reported contributors and partner programs include The Monique Pressley Show, Josh the Progressive, former police officer Michael Fanone and physician Dr. Frita Fisher.

According to Lemon, the network was built around the belief that audiences want direct reporting without corporate executives deciding which conversations deserve airtime. His company says he has accumulated nearly 11 million followers across multiple platforms.

This development is bigger than one journalist making a comeback.

For decades, television personalities—especially Black journalists and commentators—have helped networks build credibility, ratings and cultural influence while maintaining limited control over the platforms carrying their voices. Their visibility may be significant, but their position can still disappear following one executive decision.

Lemon’s latest move changes that equation.

He is no longer attempting to regain a seat at somebody else’s table. He is building the table, controlling the distribution and creating space for additional independent voices.

The strategy also reflects a larger transformation within the media industry. Audiences are steadily moving away from depending exclusively on traditional cable television. Free ad-supported streaming television, commonly known as FAST, gives media companies and independent creators an opportunity to reach viewers without requiring them to purchase another subscription.

That means Lemon is not merely recreating a cable news program online. He is positioning his company inside an expanding distribution model that could turn his audience, content library and personal brand into a sustainable media asset.

There will still be questions about the network’s reach, editorial direction, advertising support and long-term ability to compete in a crowded media environment. Launching a channel is one accomplishment; building consistent viewership and a profitable operation is another.

Nevertheless, the ownership significance cannot be ignored.

Don Lemon was once the face of a program controlled by a major corporation. He is now becoming the owner of an independent network carrying his name, perspective and editorial vision.

CNN may have ended his employment in 2023, but it did not end his influence.

Sometimes rejection closes a door. Other times, it forces a person to stop waiting for access—and build an institution of their own.

Boss Talk 101 Perspective: The real comeback is not returning to the position you lost. It is acquiring the power to create positions, platforms and opportunities for yourself and others.
