KEITH LEE PUTS HIS PLATFORM TO WORK FOR GARY, INDIANA

For Keith Lee, the Midwest food tour was supposed to be about discovering restaurants. But after seeing what families in Gary, Indiana, were going through, food reviews suddenly became secondary.

Severe storms tore through Northwest Indiana on August 11, leaving thousands of residents facing damaged infrastructure and extended power outages. In Gary, some families went nearly two weeks without electricity, losing refrigerated food and struggling with the everyday consequences of the blackout.

Lee decided his Midwest run couldn’t simply continue as planned.

On August 24, he helped turn his Gary stop into an “After the Storm Party” community relief effort at Roosevelt Pavilion, working alongside Gary Mayor Eddie Melton, The Salvation Army, local businesses and other community partners.

The event provided residents with meals, drinks and emergency supplies while also bringing together local food vendors, barbers and community organizations.

Indiana Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton also joined the effort, helping add even more support to what Lee was trying to accomplish.

But Lee wasn’t only focused on providing supplies. He wanted more people outside Gary to recognize what residents had been experiencing.

That decision fits a larger shift happening with Lee.

Earlier this year, he made headlines after visiting Destination Smokehouse, hoping to give viral personality Walter “Mr. Tendernism” Johnson $4,000 as a personal gesture of appreciation. Lee wasn’t able to meet Johnson, and the money intended for him wasn’t accepted.

Then in March 2026, Lee took another major step beyond traditional food reviews by announcing his first brand investment through a multi-year partnership with Brooklyn Dumpling Shop.

Those moments show how Lee’s platform is evolving.

He built his name sitting inside his car, tasting food and giving honest reviews that could send thousands of customers to previously overlooked restaurants.

But Gary showed another side of the Keith Lee Effect.

This time, Lee wasn’t trying to make a restaurant go viral. He redirected the attention surrounding his Midwest food tour toward a community that needed food, supplies, assistance and—perhaps just as importantly—national attention.

Lee didn’t arrive claiming he could solve everything Gary was facing. He simply used what he had: his resources, his audience and his influence.

For years, the question surrounding a Keith Lee visit has been what happens to a restaurant after he posts.

In Gary, we saw what can happen when the Keith Lee Effect reaches beyond the restaurant.
