LIL DURK ACQUITTED—BUT HIS FEDERAL LEGAL BATTLE IS NOT OVER
Lil Durk secured a major courtroom victory after a federal jury acquitted him of every charge in his highly publicized murder-for-hire trial. But despite the not-guilty verdict, the Chicago rapper did not walk out of the courthouse a free man.
The Grammy Award-winning artist, whose legal name is Durk Banks, had been accused of orchestrating a retaliatory attack against rapper Quando Rondo. Federal prosecutors alleged that the 2022 ambush was connected to the 2020 killing of Durk’s close friend and fellow Chicago rapper King Von.

Quando Rondo survived the shooting, but his cousin, Saviay’a “Lul Pab” Robinson, was killed.
Prosecutors argued that Durk financed and directed the alleged plot through associates connected to his Only the Family organization. His defense team challenged the government’s evidence, questioned the credibility of cooperating witnesses and maintained that prosecutors had failed to prove Durk authorized the attack.
After three days of deliberations, the jury agreed.
Durk was found not guilty on all counts against him, including conspiracy, murder-for-hire and stalking-related charges. His two co-defendants were also acquitted of the murder-for-hire allegations, although they were convicted on separate stalking counts.
For Durk and his supporters, the verdict represents an enormous legal victory. He faced the possibility of spending the rest of his life in federal prison if convicted.
But this is where the story becomes more complicated.
WHY IS LIL DURK STILL IN CUSTODY?
Durk remains detained because he reportedly faces a separate federal prosecution involving allegations under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, commonly known as RICO, along with alleged violent crimes in aid of racketeering—often called VICAR—and firearms offenses.
That distinction matters.
The jury fully acquitted Durk in the murder-for-hire case that just concluded. The government is not simply adding another charge to the case he already defeated. Instead, federal prosecutors are moving forward with a separate case containing different allegations that must be independently proven in court.
A RICO prosecution generally alleges participation in an ongoing criminal enterprise. VICAR charges concern certain violent acts allegedly committed to gain entrance to, maintain or increase a person’s position within a racketeering organization.
The government’s decision to continue prosecuting Durk does not establish his guilt. He remains legally presumed innocent unless prosecutors prove the new allegations beyond a reasonable doubt.
A VERDICT THAT CHANGES THE CONVERSATION
The acquittal is significant beyond Lil Durk’s individual case. It raises larger questions about how prosecutors interpret music organizations, personal relationships, financial activity and rap lyrics when attempting to establish criminal intent.
Leadership within a record label or collective is not automatically leadership of a criminal enterprise. Association is not authorization, and cultural expression is not necessarily a confession.
That is why evidence—not popularity, reputation or public speculation—must decide what happens inside a courtroom.
Lil Durk defeated one of the most serious cases ever brought against him. However, his fight for freedom is not finished. He now enters another legal battle with momentum from a complete acquittal—but also with his future once again hanging in the balance.
The murder-for-hire case is over.
The larger federal fight is not.
