New Leadership Institute Anchors Nation’s First Black Fraternity

Ithaca, N.Y. — October 18, 2025.

A new era has begun for Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., the nation’s first intercollegiate historically Black fraternity, with the unveiling of the House of Alpha Leadership Institute at Cornell University. This is the same campus where the fraternity was founded nearly 120 years ago.

The 9,000-square-foot facility, located at 105 Westbourne Lane in Ithaca’s historic Cornell Heights District, now stands as a living symbol of Alpha Phi Alpha’s legacy and vision for the future. The project was made possible by the Alpha Light Fund and a major contribution from Robert F. Smith (’85), founder and CEO of Vista Equity Partners, who purchased and renovated the building with a combined investment exceeding $10 million.

The House of Alpha Leadership Institute will serve as a residential and educational space for students dedicated to leadership, service, and equity, regardless of fraternity affiliation. Its mission echoes the fraternity’s founding principles: “manly deeds, scholarship, and love for all mankind.”

According to Smith, the goal was to create “a space that not only honors Alpha’s origin story but also equips new generations to lead with purpose and integrity.”

The building that was once home to another Greek organization, has been completely reimagined as a hub for mentorship, dialogue, and community advancement. Students from all backgrounds will be welcomed to live, learn, and grow in a space rooted in the ideals of justice and empowerment.

Alpha Phi Alpha has a storied history of producing some of the most influential figures in American life — including Martin Luther King Jr., Thurgood Marshall, W. E. B. Du Bois, and Duke Ellington.

The fraternity’s Alpha chapter at Cornell has been a beacon for Black excellence and leadership for a long time. The new institute represents a full-circle moment: a physical and symbolic return to its birthplace with renewed focus on inclusivity, education, and empowerment.

What makes the House of Alpha particularly significant is its open-door philosophy. Unlike traditional fraternity houses, this institute invites students of all backgrounds to participate in its programming. The aim is to bridge communities and foster conversations that move the needle on equity and social change.

Cornell officials hailed the project as a model for how historically Black Greek-letter organizations can leverage alumni partnerships and philanthropy to impact campuses nationwide.

“This is more than a building,” said a Cornell representative during the ribbon-cutting ceremony. “It’s a statement about what leadership looks like when history, purpose, and progress meet in the same place.”

As Alpha Phi Alpha continues to shape leaders across generations, the House of Alpha Leadership Institute stands as both a tribute to the past and a launchpad for the future.

From its Cornell roots to its global reach, Alpha’s mission remains unchanged: to uplift communities through education, service, and brotherhood. These values are now anchored in brick and mortar on the same ground where it all began.
