THE BLOCK IS BACK: “LAST FRIDAY” BRINGS ICE CUBE, MIKE EPPS & CHRIS TUCKER BACK TO THE CULTURE
THE BLOCK IS BACK: “LAST FRIDAY” BRINGS ICE CUBE, MIKE EPPS & CHRIS TUCKER BACK TO THE CULTURE
By Boss Talk 101
After more than three decades, the Friday franchise is preparing for what could be its biggest comeback yet.
Ice Cube and Mike Epps have confirmed that “Last Friday,” the long-awaited fourth installment of the iconic comedy franchise, is officially moving forward. And now, the possibility of Chris Tucker returning as Smokey has fans talking all over again.

The original Friday premiered in 1995 and quickly became more than a comedy—it became a cultural landmark. Craig and Smokey’s South Central Los Angeles adventures created characters, quotes and moments that have remained part of Black pop culture for generations.
Now, 31 years later, the story may finally continue.
ICE CUBE & MIKE EPPS ARE MAKING IT HAPPEN
Ice Cube has remained committed to bringing another Friday movie to the screen, and the latest developments show that the project has moved well beyond fan speculation.

Epps, who became a major part of the franchise through Next Friday and Friday After Next, has also been vocal about bringing the original energy back while introducing new comedic talent to the franchise. (Complex)
But there’s one name that could take this reunion to another level.
SMOKEY MAY BE COMING HOME
Chris Tucker.
For longtime Friday fans, Smokey is inseparable from the original movie’s legacy. Tucker’s performance alongside Ice Cube helped make the first film a classic and launched Tucker into a major Hollywood career.
Tucker did not return for the two sequels, but recent reports indicate that conversations about bringing him back for Last Friday are happening—and Tucker has expressed interest in returning if the project feels right. (Complex)
That potential Craig-and-Smokey reunion is enough to send longtime fans straight back to 1995.
BUT THIS IS MORE THAN A REUNION
The new movie isn’t simply about recreating the past.

That could give the franchise an opportunity to do what Friday has always done best: use comedy to reflect what is happening in the community.
The neighborhood has changed.
The culture has changed.
The characters have grown.
And Los Angeles has changed dramatically since Craig and Smokey first hit the screen.
That gives Last Friday the opportunity to entertain longtime fans while introducing an entirely new generation to the world of Friday.
A LEGACY THAT REFUSES TO DIE
The Friday franchise has survived multiple generations because its characters feel familiar. The humor is rooted in everyday life, relationships, family, friendships, neighborhood personalities and the realities of Black life in Los Angeles.
And the legacy continues even as some of the original cast members are no longer with us.
John Witherspoon, who famously played Craig’s father Willie Jones, died in 2019. Tiny Lister Jr., who played the legendary neighborhood bully Deebo, died in 2020. Other beloved members of the original cast have also passed away. (ComingSoon)
Their absence makes a potential fourth installment even more meaningful.
THE QUESTION EVERYBODY IS ASKING
Can Last Friday capture the magic of the original?
That’s the challenge.
Hollywood has changed. Comedy has changed. Los Angeles has changed. And the audience that grew up watching Craig, Smokey, Day-Day and Deebo is now raising another generation.
But if Ice Cube, Mike Epps and potentially Chris Tucker can find the balance between honoring what made Friday legendary and telling a story that speaks to today’s culture, Last Friday could become more than another sequel.
It could become a generational reunion.
After 31 years, the block may finally be getting the Friday it has been waiting for.
Boss Talk 101 will continue following this story as new casting, production and release information develops.
The block is back. The question is: Are you ready for Friday?
