You Can’t Judge a ’90s Photo by Today’s Beauty Standards

Jim Jones and Maino’s exchange about prison visits started as a joke. Then it raised a bigger question about how we see the women who stood by someone during a difficult time.

An old photo can become a punchline in seconds. Take it out of its era, put it on a screen, and invite people to judge it by what looks fashionable today.

That is the tension behind a conversation involving Jim Jones and Maino. While discussing a carousel of photos Maino had posted of women who visited him during his incarceration, Jones and others joked about how the women looked. Maino pushed back. He pointed out that the pictures reflected the 1990s, when beauty trends were different, and that the women were coming to visit him in jail.

The exchange is funny to some viewers. It also deserves a second look.

You cannot fairly judge a decades-old picture through today’s beauty standards. Hairstyles change. Makeup changes. What cameras capture changes. So do the looks social media rewards. A photo taken before filters and today’s beauty trends should not be treated like a failed attempt to meet them.

More than that, these were real women in a real part of Maino’s life. They made the effort to visit someone who was locked up. Maino described himself as having been loved during that period. Whether each visitor was a friend, partner, or someone else close to him, their presence meant enough for him to share those photos years later.

That is what gets lost when the conversation stops at appearances. A prison visit takes time and intention. The people who show up during someone’s hardest years often become part of their story, even if the world only sees an old picture.

Maino also made a point about perspective: people were measuring those women against the beauty standards they see now. That does not mean nobody can laugh about an old hairstyle, including the people in the photos. It means there is a difference between laughing at an era and reducing the women in it to a rating.

For PRIMETIME News, the deeper question is this: When we look back at the people who stood by us, do we remember what they looked like—or what they did?

Jim Jones and Maino gave viewers a moment to debate. Underneath the jokes is a reminder that loyalty rarely comes dressed for the camera. Sometimes it looks like someone taking the time to show up.
